Switching from cartridge razors to electric

by Chet

Hi Tyler,

I recently purchased a Braun 390-cc and I honestly couldn't believe how close it shaved. But the day after I shaved with it, I noticed there was some irritation and a few bumps. So I waited a few days to shave again and when I did, the day after there was still some irritation and bumps but not as much as the first time I shaved with it.

So, generally how long does take to get used to an electric shaver? Also, would you recommend I shave with it every day or every other day in order to speed up the adjustment period?

Thank You

Answer:

Hey there, thanks for the question.

Your story is quite common for people switching to electric shavers. My experience was similar.

There's really no set time it will take to get used to a new form of shaving. I remember I had those small "red bumps" for the first few shaves, but by the end of about a week I was fine. Hopefully it only takes you about a week, but others have reported it takes longer.

The main reason is that you're now shaving against the grain, and that's why you got such a nice smooth shave. The only problem is that it does take "some time" to adjust. Again, there's no set time for everyone.

So I would continue to shave regularly, unless it's too painful which probably won't be the case. Just continue to shave on a normal schedule for you, and hopefully things improve.

Although you probably don't need it at this stage, but I do have a video on shaving tips which may help you over at the YouTube channel. You might find it useful.

Things to consider from that video are the conditions in which you're shaving. Make sure your skin is nice and dry, and don't press in too hard or go over areas too much.

Bottom line, if you're getting results but just experiencing a bit of irritation because you're new to these products, give it some time. If things really don't improve after several weeks (3 or 4) consider trying a pre shave lotion before totally giving up.

All the best,

Tyler.
