Philips Norelco Shavers -
The Most High Tech Electric Shavers

SensoTouch 3D in its box

Philips Norelco shavers are made by The Philips Company, which isn't a surprise, but "Norelco" is really only used for products sold in North American, and more specifically the States.

In other parts of the world it's just Philips, however many people seem to interchange the name when discussing these types of products.

So just be aware of this when searching for various models. If you're shopping online or researching various reviews on different websites, this distinction might help you avoid confusion.

The products themselves continue to get updated and new models are released quite often.

The SensoTouch line has received a lot of attention because of it's unique design and good customer feedback.

Most people who enjoy using rotary shavers should consider a SensoTouch model, however there are some other good options which aren't as advanced such as the Power and AquaTouch.

Both of these are more suitable for those with an average to light beard growth, and they're very similar except the "Aqua" models can be used wet.

Like all brands, there's a good range of features and prices which should accomodate everyone, especially those that are use to this design (rotary).

Best Selling Models

SensoTouch 3D - 1250xcc/42

  • High Tech
  • Rotary Design
  • Pivoting Head
  • Wet Dry Feature

This might be the best rotary shaver available.

After analyzing the reviews for this model it's clear that most people are impressed. If you've always used this type of design then this is an excellent choice for you. However, if you have always used foil shavers then I would stick to similar priced models like the Braun Series 7 or some advanced Panasonic units.

This is the most advanced system from this brand and it comes in a few different models. Some come with cleaning stations and have more advanced battery displays, but they all have the main important features like the Ultra Track shaving blades, and the 360 degree Gyro Flex 3D Head.

Most people can't justify paying more money for the higher models like the 1280x and 1290x. The 1250x is probably the highest you will want to go to get your money's worth. Two models have the Jet Clean System (1280xcc, 1250xcc) which works really well, but it's not needed. You can save money by just buying the electric razor (1250x) which can be cleaned manually.

There are 3 pivoting heads which gives you a very close shave, and it's very easy to clean. Because it's waterproof you can use it in the shower or over the sink with shaving cream.

I personally found I got a better shave when using it wet and would recommend it for anyone looking for a wet shave.

Philips AquaTouch

  • Well Priced
  • Rotary Design
  • Inward Pivoting Head
  • Wet Dry Feature

For a rotary user who wants something under 100 dollars, these models are worth checking out.

Based on my personal experience, I would recommend the AquaTouch or PowerTouch (dry only) models to those with a medium to average beard. If you have thick facial hair, you might want something with a bit more power.

I also noticed that shaving technique might play a big role in how these perform. Generally the rotary design is a little harder to use. Users who see good results say a light circular stroke is needed for the best results.

The other thing to watch out for is the various product numbers. The AquaTouch is the exact same as the PowerTouch, just with the "wet feature", but there are 700, 800 and 900 series models. The best way to distinguish between each model is to head over to a Philips website and use their comparison tool.

You'll often notice that the main differences have to do with the blade technology, and the battery life.

So unfortunately looking into these models is a little confusing. For those with a thicker beard, it's best to stay clear of them.

However, those who have always seen good results with a rotary model, and who have a lighter beard, could get a great deal with this one.

SensoTouch 2D - 1150x

The SensoTouch 2D shavers are not quite as impressive as the 3D options, but they're less expensive.

So if you want to save a bit of money but still get a SensoTouch shaver, go with the 1150x model.

The main difference between the 2D and the 3D models is within the shaving heads. The 3D heads have an extra down-ward pivot, where the 2D shavers only pivot 360 degrees and in-ward. Also, the blades are slightly different.

But the fact that they're less expensive is probably the reason why they're more popular. In fact this specific model has been on the best selling list for quite some time.

If you want more of a basic model in the SensoTouch line-up and you don't want a cleaning station, go with this one. If you want to upgrade or get a cleaning station, consider the 3D models.
