There isn’t one specific electric shaver designed for African American men, however there are a few models which are better than others.

Some black men experience irritation when shaving and it’s usually caused by ingrown hairs. Certain facial hair can be very curly and this creates ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Although this isn’t a problem with everyone, it does negatively affect quite a few.

Individual cases often create a bit of confusion regarding which are the best options. Any research you do on this specific problem will reveal cases which praise rotary shavers, and others which claim foil shavers are better.

So once again trial and error seems to be the best approach. That being said, you don’t want to buy 3 or 4 units before you find the right one.

Most of the advice for reducing razor bumps and irritation has to do with shaving with disposable razor blades.

Here are some of the main tips:

Avoid going over the same area
Use a sharp blade and replace it often
Don’t shave against the grain
Wash your face with a good cleanser
Apply high quality shaving cream for sensitive skin
Apply high quality after shave

When looking for an electric shaver it would be wise to incorporate some of these tips, however it’s easier said then done, and it’s not going to always make a difference.

First of all, not all products can be used wet, therefore using shaving cream for sensitive skin and washing your face before isn’t always an option. So these tips for traditional shaving don’t really crossover 100% of the time.

Sure there are wet shavers, but they don’t necessarily produce less irritation than dry ones. In my experience some of the best selling systems which can be used wet with shaving cream have not produced less irritation than dry models. So they’re an option, but it will usually come down to personal preference as it often does.

The same shavers which are recommended for sensitive skin will be the best options.

More powerful shavers will require you to not press in as hard on your face, and use fewer strokes. These things can lead to less irritation which is ideal for people with razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Therefore, most of the less advanced products like portable shavers are not recommended.

For sensitive skin, I recommend the Braun Series 7, and it is also recommended for black men who may suffer from irritation. It is very easy to use and requires less pressure than many other models. The only problem is that this is not a wet shaver and therefore you need to use it dry before you wash your face.

The second recommendation would be the Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D. This is a good choice if you plan to use it wet with shaving cream for sensitive skin.

These are two of the recommended models because they offer a smooth shave with very little irritation. The Braun Series 7 is recommended first because it produces an effective shave with little to no irritation.

The SensoTouch 3D is the runner up because it can be used wet with shaving cream. This will allow you to wash your face thoroughly before a shave, and apply shaving cream for sensitive skin..

Another tip would be to apply some pre shave oil like Williams Lectric Shave. This may help reduce irritation.

Again, your first choice should be the Series 7
